So it’s been a while…

I can’t even remember when the last time I wrote in here was, but I know a heck of a lot has happened since my last post and I really can’t figure out how to fit it all in :) .

We went to Hawaii in May to celebrate with my brother and my new sister in law and see them get hitched.  Kauai is incredibly beautiful and it was an amazing get away.  Leif didn’t take his work computer and we were actually able to relax and truly escape from the normal work load which gave us plenty of time to focus on the kids and each other.  Which was convenient considering we celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary the day before we came home.  Our condo was spacious and right on the beach (which was actually more of a reef but beautiful none the less).  We had a lot of fun snorkeling, playing on the beach, playing at the playground and sightseeing.  We drove up the north shore, went to Waimea Canyon and toured the Na Aina Kai gardens.  On our anniversary we took a boat tour to the fern grotto, hiked a little ways up to a view point of the Na Pali Coast and ate a wonderful dinner in Hanalei.  The highlight of the trip was definitely the wedding, which was beautiful, sincere and a lot of fun.  Getting to know our new family members was a blast and I hope we have another opportunity to hang out soon.

We came home to chaos, all the final activities to tie up the school year for Josh, Leif trying to catch up on all the work he fell behind on while on vacation and me trying to tie up all the loose ends in order to have everything done to graduate in June.  But we managed to work it all out and I am now officially a college graduate!  I don’t really know how to proceed from this point however since I really don’t know what exactly it is that I want to do.  So for now I am keeping my options open, spending as much time as I can with the kids and looking into both work possibilities or possibly continuing on to get a master’s degree.  I cannot express how lucky I feel to have such a wonderful and supportive husband and family.  Thank you all so much for all the help, support and love.

In the beginning of July We went to Redding to celebrate Bruce and Martha’s 40th wedding anniversary.  We stopped in Klamath to visit my dad and Linda then went down to Hat Creek to tour the radio observatory.  The party was fun, getting all the family and friends together was so much fun and I love to see all of the cousins together.  The kids stayed down with Grandma and Grandpa and had a blast camping, fishing, riding bikes, painting, and playing in the water.  Leif and I shampooed carpets, sorted through boxes and paperwork, went out to the movies and dinner and went horse back riding.  We enjoyed relaxing and getting lots of sleep but the house was altogether too quiet without the kids here and needless to say I am so very glad to have them back at home.

I think that about covers the last couple months for us.  The kids are growing like crazy.  Daniel has grown several inches in the last couple months and seems to be communicating much more efficiently.  He is busy all the time, and wants to do everything by himself and will have a complete melt down when we try to help or tell him he can’t do something the exact way he would like to do it.  We are just working on finding the balance between letting him have his independence and still maintaining some amount of control.  He is still constantly causing trouble and while it half drives me crazy, I love how curious his mind is and that he is always willing to try something new.

Olivia is also growing a lot.  Physically she has slowed down a bit but mentally and emotionally she has really developed lately.  We are still working on her letters which she loves and she has pretty much all of her letter sounds down.  We have started blending the letter sounds together to make words but she is a little unsure of herself and gets easily frustrated.  She seems to be a perfectionist and at the slightest hint of struggle she gets anxious.  It doesn’t take much to talk her through it though and I am really proud of her willingness and desire to learn new things.  She is developing her problem solving skills and the many blow-ups we had between her and Daniel just a few months ago have dwindled.  She is learning how to play with others and how to let us know when she needs a little time to herself. Amber cut her hair before we went to Hawaii.  At Olivia’s request she cut it up to her chin which is so very cute but makes her look so much more like a big kid.  She also dresses herself most of the time now which I love, but now that she is capable of picking out and changing her own clothes, she does…  usually 3 or 4 times a day.

I don’t even know where to begin with Josh.  He is coming into adolescence in full force.  He looks so much older to me recently and is nearly as tall as I am now.  His feet are huge, he wears a size 10 in mens, and he is starting to get facial hair.  His emotions are all over the board and we have to keep in mind that a lot of the time when we don’t understand his reaction to something, that he probably doesn’t either.  It has been fun in so many ways though.  He really seems to be noticing the world around him and it is fun to have a conversation with him and hear his thoughts and ideas.  He’s interested in a lot of the same things we are now and we can sit and watch tv or movies together after the little kids go to bed.   He went to his first dance not too long ago and has a girlfriend (they mostly just email back and forth but it is a big step for Josh).  He is a great big brother and a fantastic babysitter.  And me? I just can’t believe we are here already.  It seems like just yesterday he was playing with legos and hot wheels.

So besides the big stuff, we have also taken several trips to the zoo, to OMSI and various berry farms around town.  We have also gone camping twice and worked on some bike riding and water playing.  Josh and I got to go see a movie together Kala learned how to swim.  We’ve had dinners with friends and family picnics.  It’s been a fantastic summer and I am sad to see it coming to an end.

The new rooms…

As promised (and then forgotten), here are pictures of the kids’ new rooms!

I apologize ahead of time for the quality of the pictures…

Olivia’s:

Daniel’s:

And Josh’s:

The pictures don’t do the rooms justice and I am pretty proud of how they turned out.  As I’m sure you all know I am not a very organized person and I don’t consider myself to be especially creative either…  But what I love about all three rooms is that they look great but are also very organized.  Which means it is much easier to keep them clean.

The other thing is that the majority of the furniture and decorations are things that we either already had or things that were hand me downs (with a few exceptions).  The book cases in Daniel and Olivia’s rooms are old ones we had that we spray painted.  The desks in Josh and Olivia’s rooms are desks my Uncle made for my brother and me when we were kids.  The doll house and the train table were hand me downs and Leif made the lego table (with the super cool lego village on it as seen above) that is in Josh’s room.  The rocking chair in Daniel’s room belonged to Don’s mom.  We bought the space painting in Daniels room and the Flower painting in Olivia’s room (both from target and both for under $50!).  So we didn’t have to put a lot of money into the project and stayed environmentally friendly too!

Now if I can get the rest of the house as organized as the kids’ rooms I’ll be in good shape :) .

A little spring fun in Myrtle Creek

For spring break we spent a few days in Myrtle Creek and in spite of a weather forecast of rain all week the weather was absolutely beautiful.  And the kids soaked it up.  They couldn’t get enough of the sunshine and walks and playing in the creek.  We lived on this property for a few years when I was a kid and even though the time we lived there is shorter than any other place we lived, part of me will always consider this space home.  More so than anywhere else I have ever lived.  I think this is because as a child I spent my days exploring, discovering and growing with this space.

I love knowing that my kids will have that same kind of relationship with my childhood home.  I love to watch them splash in the creek.  I love to watch Josh take off up the hill with Kala in tow, to shoot the BB gun and find new, unexplored, magical places.  I love the excitement on Olivia and Daniel’s faces whenever they find out they are going to Myrtle Creek.

Because it doesn’t get any better than this right?

Researching…

I realize I am not very good at keeping this little blog current.  I want to do better, I really do.  It’s just, well, umm, I guess I am busy!

At the moment I am juggling graduation (in June! I can hardly believe it!), a new internship (which I love and really feel that I will make a difference at), writing my final, big research paper, and then as always the kids, house and attempting to have some semblance if a social life.

It is busy and exhausting but the push of having deadlines and doing meaningful work and watching the kids grow and change everyday is really quite exhilarating.  I actually find myself torn because part of me just can’t wait for life to slow down but the other part of me is afraid of letting the excitement go.

Also, I have started looking at tickets for Hawaii in May.  And I am super excited.

Olivia is 4!

I can’t believe my girl is 4 years old.  This year flew by so quickly and Olivia has changed so much.  I don’t know how to explain it except that she is such a big girl now.  She can do so many things for herself now and she takes a lot of pride in being able to accomplish things with little or no help.  She still pretends most of the time and has recently taken in a lot of orphan friends, animals and unicorns.  The level of thought she puts into her pretend play is incredible and I hope she can hold on to this as grows up.  She loves books and can recognize all of her letters.  We do lessons a few times a week to connect the letter sounds to the letters and she loves this time.  She has learned A, B, H, G, S, T and P.  We have also worked with blending them and she can now (with some effort) read many words including; hat, taps, sat, pam, bat, etc.  She read through two early books the other day and the excitement was totally unreal.  She still loves music and makes up new songs everyday.  She also loves to create and can work on an art project for hours at a time.

I love the sweetness that is this girl.  She takes good care of all of us, always willing to give mom and dad a back rub or grab a diaper for Daniel when he needs it.  She is eager to learn and eager to play and always ready to try new things.  She is a good sister, a good cousin and a wonderful daughter.

Happy Birthday Princess.  We love you more than you’ll ever know.

Festivities

What a whirlwind of activity our house has been :) .  Our festivities began the Monday before Christmas and are just coming to a stop.  Or a slow… or well, I guess things are never really slow around here but at least maybe we’ll be able to take a few moments to breathe.  It has all been wonderful but completely chaotic and I am so very impressed with how well the kids have adjusted to all the busy-ness.

So here is a basic recap of the previous month or so:  Christmas was wonderful and we had the opportunity to celebrate with many of our loved ones.  Leif’s parents, Grandma, Aunt Lois and Erin and Adam came over for both Christmas Eve and Christmas,  Micah, Amber and the kids came over for brunch the day after, we took a short trip down to Myrtle Creek with my mom and Don, then back home to see Amy and Jesse and do Christmas all over again.  I became an auntie (again) twice this month (Welcome Jasper and Gabriel!!).  I started classes for winter term and my internship.  We moved several of the rooms in our house and redecorated the kids rooms.  And OLIVIA TURNED 4!!  And in between all the homework, moving, painting and visits from family — we all managed to get a stomach bug adding a lot of laundry to that list!

We didn’t get many pictures, I guess we were too busy making memories to capture them…

Also, I will try to post pictures of the kids new rooms soon.  But first, I owe Princess Olivia a birthday post!

A conversation with my mom…

(over the phone while she is driving to Myrtle Creek)

Mom: I thought I should let you know I’m heading south finally.

Me: Oh good, the UPS guy didn’t come yet… (she was waiting for some plans)

Mom: I figured, since you didn’t call. You’ll check the email and answer the work phone right?

Me:  No problem.  Have fun.

Mom:  I mean, I can check them down there but it’s so hard (they have dial up)

Me: No problem, I got it :) .  I’ll call you if anything comes up…

Mom: okay I’ll talk to you soon…  Oh hey Melissa?

Me: yeah?

Mom: I am so thankful you’re my daughter.

Me:  (Touched) Aaww.  Thanks Mom.  I am thankful that you’re my mom.

Mom: Yeah, I really like you now that you’re 30.

Me: (pause, giggle) Well, I’m glad you like me NOW.

Mom: Well, I mean, I liked you before… it’s just we gave you such a hard time about turning 30 and not being able to trust you.  But we were just kidding.  I really like you.

A Weekend Getaway

This past weekend Leif and I had the opportunity to get a way for a couple of days completely kid free.  And it was completely fantastic.  We realized as we were taking Kala for a late night walk one of our nights away that we in fact have not taken a vacation together, without kids, since our honeymoon.  That’s right, we have had ONE vacation (just the two of us) since we have been married (nearly 7 years!).

Don’t get me wrong, we love spending time with our kids.  All in all they are great travelers and everything is more fun when they are around.  At least for me, when I am with the kids I am a little more likely to experience things in the same way they do and everything is a little more fascinating and inspiring and fun.  And quite honestly we spent most of our time thinking about how much fun they would be having if they were with us.  Not having them with us was important for a couple reasons though.  First, it gave us the opportunity to really miss them and realize how much we truly enjoy being with them.  It also forced us to focus on really spending time with each other as opposed to putting all of our energy into taking care of the kids.

Considering it was such a short trip it was surprisingly relaxing.  We only ate out once, the rest of the time we munched on food we packed from home.  (It’s amazing how little you have to pack when it’s three people as opposed to 5!)  We went for several walks, one of which was through a wildlife refuge at the top of the peninsula.  It was beautiful! We caught a break in the stormy weather so the air was crisp and cool and the sun was shining.  We saw many birds, mostly blue herons (Josh’s favorite!) and a lot of different varieties of fungus.  I know, people don’t normally get excited about mushrooms but just look at this one that was as big as my foot!!

Granted my foot is pretty small but this is cool right?

While we lucked out with the weather on the walk around wildlife refuge, we weren’t quite so lucky when we took Kala down to the beach.  Not that Kala minded.

We walked on the beach several times, went to oysterville to buy some cranberry scone mix and drove on the beach but as it was pretty stormy we also spent quite a bit of time just hanging out together watching movies or playing on the computer.

It was fun spending so much time with Leif and I imagine that must be what most people feel like when dating.  It’s always been easy to just spend time together but without the stressors of everyday life (no time schedules, homework, work) it was, i don’t know, just pleasant.  As I think I mentioned before, the trip was very relaxing and I think for the first in my adult life I felt ready to come home and get back into the normal routine.  And that?  That felt really good.

On turning 30…

As of Friday (Nov. 6th) I am 30 years old!  Many people have asked me if I was going to have a hard time turning 30 and I have to say no, I really wasn’t dreading turning 30.  I am sure that at some point the tide will turn but so far I have only enjoyed getting older, I guess life just keeps getting better and better.

My birthday is normally pretty uneventful, usually one of my presents from the guys is getting to sit around all day and read, but this year we changed things up a little and kept ourselves busy ALL DAY.  So here’s a little preview of my perfect day…  First up, an eggnog latte.  Yumm!  Then stopped by Round Table to pick up a little pizza and drop it off at Josh’s school for lunch.  Next up, my birthday present, a tattoo.  We had to wait while he drew up my design so we took a little stroll around Beaverton and read magazines at the library.  I think we caught the last little bit of sunshine while on our walk, it was crisp and beautiful out.

Here it is.  I couldn’t be happier with the way it came out.

After picking Josh up from school we went to dinner with family and friends at the Delta Cafe.  The food was delicious, the atmosphere was fun and the company was amazing.

Thank you to all of you who came or called or sent a message or card.  You all made the day truly and completely magical.
